In the race for top luxury hotel in Melaka, the Renaissance wins by a length. It's plush and elegant and the view from its 9th floor pool can't be beaten. The only downside is the location, in a rather seedy part of town 15 minutes' walk from Melaka's main attractions.
In stark contrast to the grimy streets that surround it, the Renaissance is effortlessly luxurious and very professionally run (hardly surprising, given it's part of the Marriott chain). The lobby is warmly lit and cosy, so much so it might take an effort of will to step outside. The rooms are also immaculate and boast brand new luxury beds. Besides the usual array of restaurants and facilities, the outdoor pool is another major drawcard, affording wonderful views over the Malacca Strait, the tumbledown rooftops of the old town and, on the other side, the horseshoe bend of the Sungei Melaka that embraces Kampung Morten.
